Trip to the Deserts...
Finally! So 2 weekends ago we organized with our neighbors (a Russian/french couple with 2 kids Manon and Sam's age, lovely company!) a 3 days trip to the desert... and it was awesome!!!! The landscapes were just breathtaking....
We were in the white desert national park, situated about 30kms north of the Farafra Oasis (500kms from Cairo). We were told that it is one of the most extraordinary and famous regions in the entire Sahara Desert. Landscapes dominated by brilliant white limestone formations that are the remains of microscopic marine animals that were deposited there over 80.000.000 years ago!! so the region was under water and when they emerged the deposits were gradually eroded, carved and sculpted for millions of years by atmospheric agents which gave rise to pinnacles (like the big mushroom that I will show you next on the pictures....). Voila for the historic part (ok ok I copied a little little bit the travel book on Bahariya Oasis!!!).
So we left Cairo Thursday afternoon just after school and headed toward the Oasis. We stayed there the night and in the morning visited the black desert which if just behind the Bahariya Oasis. Beautiful.... came back to the camp, and after a quick but nice Bedouin lunch started our ride in the desert toward the Western Desert. We spend the night over there, 4 small tents in the middle of this massive desert, it was a fantastic feeling.... Next morning we had time to enjoy the surroundings again and went back to the camp through the White desert.... probably the nicest of all!!! That's where you can see the big mushrooms.... the kids picked up all kind of crystal, stones black and white, fossilized wood... their greatest treasures!!!
The ride back to Cairo was loooong! but is was so worth it....Ok here it is:
On the way out of Cairo....
Our camp in Bahariya Oasis... the kids (and us) loved to sleep in these bungalows, surrounded by the desert, it was special!
Freedom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tough climb of our first big dune in the Black Desert!!
Father and son having a little rest..
This was our campsite for the second night... the tents were behind one of these big "stoned tents"!!! (this area of the Western desert is called Tent Valley).
This desert fox was a "friend" of your Bedouin guide.... when we had the camp set up he was already around... waiting for the party and the feast!!! Imagine the joy of Manon and Sam to see that!!!
And how about that moon????????????
Good morning!!! time for a nice coffee!!!
